Ponza Island, Italy
Progetto rientrante nel FINANZIAMENTO REGIONALE A FAVORE DELLE RETI DI IMPRESA TRA ATTIVITA’ ECONOMICHE SU STRADA DI CUI ALLA DGR N.68 DEL 22/02/2022 previsto nel programma di rete del Consorzio Con.Ponza.
WHERE AND WHO WE ARE
After the first edition of Ponza LandArt in 2023, Laura Pagliai, as part of the second edition intends to invite interested artists to apply for the artist residency that will take place on the island of Ponza (Lt) from 15 to 22 April 2025.
ARTIST RESIDENCE
The Ponza LandArt project was born in 2023 with the first edition that saw the involvement of 13 artists of Italian and foreign nationality, who during their stay on the island have developed land art works still visible in the botanical garden.
Now, in its second edition in 2025, the aim is to enrich the island and its naturalistic paths with a permanent open-air exhibition of artistic tiles and land art works, in a dialogue between contemporary art, historical and naturalistic testimonies.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
The application is free and must be received by March 23, 2025 at the email address ponzalandart@laurapagliai.com.
The selected artists will live an experience of sharing among themselves and will be hosted free of charge for the 7 nights of the residency, in half-board mode, with a program full of boat excursions and on historical cultural routes. The cost of the return ferry from Formia to Ponza will be covered by the organization.
The artists will be responsible for the trip to the port of Formia, the material for the creation of the proposed works and any personal insurance they wish to take out.
To best achieve artistic sharing between different backgrounds and art forms, the selected artists will have to ensure their presence for the entire period of the residency. Each artist will be able to independently organize their days with the others and at the same time be free to manage their own schedules and work.
Each artist can participate by proposing one or both of the following projects to the organization BY MARCH 23, 2025:
project A
n. 2-3 artistic tiles made with various techniques (ceramic, mosaic, etc.) measuring 25×25 cm
project B
a land art work in wood or iron, of variable size
Both projects can be presented to be created directly on the island during the artist’s week (the actual feasibility in that period of time and the sourcing of materials directly on the island must be assessed in advance), or you can arrive at the residency with the works already ready for installation.
The intervention will be freely chosen by the artist who will commit to safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable art and at the same time producing works that are admissible from a safety point of view.
What each artist creates will become part of the island’s heritage and will be installed in places agreed with the organizers, remaining accessible to the island community and its tourists, until any spontaneous deterioration.
By participating, you agree to release the rights of use relating to texts, images of the works and the stages of creation, for the creation of social content and various forms of promotion.
A map of the route will be created, with information on the artist and the motivation for the artistic choice.
A MATTONELLE D’ARTISTA Project
The Project is designed as an artistic enrichment of the historic center of the town and some nature trails on the island, a colorful route, a combination of contemporary art and sites of historical and landscape interest.
Open call for national and international artists who will be able to freely decorate during the residency, 2-3 tiles measuring 25×25 cm each. The cost of transportation and the material for making and decorating will be borne by the artist. Each artist must provide for the procurement of such material on the island or bring it with them in advance.
It is possible to arrive at the artist residency with the works already completed, ready only for installation.
Project B OPERA di Land art
Artists are asked to create a work of land art to be made of relatively durable material (wood, iron …) to be installed along some nature trails. Each artist must verify the environmental feasibility, the safety of the installation and the minimum resistance to bad weather.
The cost of the material, its procurement on the island or possibly its transport with them will be borne by the artist.

All artistic techniques capable of interacting naturally with the place will be admitted: both the land art works and the artistic tiles can be decorated with various techniques, from mosaic to ceramics, to painting, designed for the places on the island with which they will have to interact in a sustainable way, with particular attention to the use of non-polluting materials, but which resist the elements for some time and which have their own design safety and a study of effective stability.
The materials and the creation of the work will be the responsibility of the selected artists who will have to evaluate the actual possibility of creation and/or availability and assembly on the island.
THEME OF THE 2nd edition Ponza LandArt 2025
NO MAN IS AN ISLAND
No man is an island, complete in itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the whole. John Donne (London, 1572 – 1631)
The poet’s words take on different nuances and invite us to see ourselves as part of a larger dimension, of which we can perceive the connections.
The image of an island in the middle of the sea that by its very nature is destined to remain alone, disconnected from the rest of the world, perfectly conveys the idea of this necessity.
Especially today, in a society that sees the weakening of social bonds and the illusory promise of proximity of digital networks that “on paper” cancel distances and bring people closer to each other, it can happen that we feel isolated and distant from each other.
The invitation is to step out of our limited point of view, to observe ourselves in the whole of our relationships, to understand our life as no longer “a solitary island”, but part of a whole, a single great organism called humanity, in which each man is connected to every other single existence in an infinite chain.
